The traditional lighting ceremony for the Olympic flame in Greece encountered a glitch due to cloudy skies, prompting the use of a backup flame instead of the usual method involving a parabolic mirror and the sun's rays. Despite the setback, the flame was kindled and will be carried on a 3,100-mile route through Greece before being handed over to Paris Games organizers. Thousands of spectators gathered at the ancient stadium in Olympia for the event, and the flame is set to arrive in Marseille, France, on May 8.
