Mathieu van der Poel, the favorite to win the Amstel Gold Race, was unable to replicate his recent winning performances, ultimately losing the race despite a remarkable comeback in the final lap.
The Amstel Gold Race is underway with Mathieu van der Poel as the hot favorite, aiming to become the first man to win the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, and Amstel Gold in the same season. The peloton is tackling numerous climbs, with Alpecin-Deceuninck and Ineos Grenadiers leading the chase. Van der Poel's teammate Gianni Vermeersch has abandoned the race, while riders like Bob Jungels and Mikkel Honoré make attacks. The race is expected to be an exciting and challenging one, with van der Poel's dominance extending beyond the cobbled classics.
Tom Pidcock praises Tadej Pogačar's strength after finishing third in the men's Amstel Gold Race. Pidcock struggled to keep up with Pogačar's acceleration with 28km to go, but managed to hold on for third place. The podium finish is a sign of recovery for Pidcock after suffering a concussion earlier this season. He will now focus on the Ardennes classics, where he will face tough competition from Pogačar and defending champ Remco Evenepoel.
Amstel Gold Race director Leo van Vliet has denied that the lead organisation car had any effect on the outcome of the race, despite TV footage showing the car remaining close ahead of winner Tadej Pogačar immediately after overtaking him. Van Vliet insisted that the car had no choice but to spend a brief period of time in front of Pogačar for safety reasons. Pogačar recognised that the car had been too close but pointed out that the lead director’s car’s pulling ahead of a breakaway was the kind of manoeuvre that happens in all races.
Ben Healy finished second behind Tadej Pogacar at the Amstel Gold Race after dropping his old teammate Tom Pidcock in the finale. Healy closed to within 20 seconds of Pogacar shortly after his late attack, though the Slovenian pulled away again soon afterwards. The 22-year-old started his season with some strong displays at the Challenge Mallorca before picking up two wins on Italian roads, landing the GP Industria & Artigianato di Larciano and a stage of the Settimana Coppi e Bartali.
Tadej Pogacar won the Amstel Gold Race after receiving advice from Mathieu van der Poel to attack on the Keutenberg climb. Pogacar soloed to victory, claiming his 11th win of the season. He credited van der Poel's advice for his success. Pogacar's next races are Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
