Wess Roley, a 20-year-old with no criminal history, is suspected of ambushing and killing two Idaho firefighters during a wildfire on Canfield Mountain, after starting the fire to lure responders. Roley died by suicide at the scene, and investigators are still trying to determine his motive, with social media posts and minimal prior police interactions being part of the investigation.
A New Mexico State Police officer, Justin Hare, was fatally shot in an apparent ambush attack by a driver he tried to help on Interstate 40. The suspect, Jaremy Smith, shot Hare twice, stole his patrol car, and fled the scene. An arrest warrant has been issued for Smith, who is considered armed and dangerous. Hare, a 2018 police recruit school graduate, leaves behind his parents, girlfriend, and two young children. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham offered her condolences, and authorities are working to bring Hare's killer to justice.
