The Angels have designated Alfonso Rivas for assignment to make room for right-hander Robert Stephenson. Rivas, who was claimed off waivers a month ago, has yet to play a game for the Angels. While his major league performance has been modest, his strong Triple-A stats and remaining option make him a potential acquisition for another club.
The San Diego Padres have selected Alfonso Rivas onto the big league roster and activated Manny Machado from the 10-day injured list. Nelson Cruz has been placed on the 10-day IL with a right hamstring strain, and José Azocar has been optioned to Triple-A El Paso. To open a 40-man roster spot for Rivas, Luis Campusano has moved from the 10-day to the 60-day IL. Rivas, a Chula Vista native, signed a minor league deal with the Padres over the winter and has been hitting .319/.440/.571 over 200 trips to the dish in El Paso.
