The Los Angeles Chargers have signed tackle Alex Leatherwood, a former first-round pick who has played for the Raiders, Bears, and Browns. Leatherwood, who had a standout college career at Alabama, will wear No. 67 for the Chargers.
The Cleveland Browns have signed wide receiver Austin Watkins, offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood, defensive end Isaiah Thomas, and several other players to their practice squad. Watkins, who was waived and then re-signed, impressed during the preseason with 16 receptions for 257 yards and two touchdowns. The team also added cornerback Kahlef Hailassie off waivers from the Chiefs and waived cornerback A.J. Green to make room.
The Chicago Bears have made several roster moves, releasing quarterback P.J. Walker, waiving offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood, and waiving/injuring guard Gabe Houy. Walker, who signed with the Bears in March, had a lackluster preseason performance, leading to his release. Leatherwood, a first-round pick in 2021, was waived by the Raiders last year and claimed by the Bears. Houy, an undrafted free agent, suffered an injury in the preseason finale. The Bears now have three quarterbacks remaining on their roster and must cut 31 more players to reach the NFL's mandatory 53-man limit.
