Skier dies on Mammoth Mountain's Dropout 2 as witnesses watch from chairlift

A skier died Thursday on Mammoth Mountain while attempting Dropout 2, one of California's steepest marked trails. He fell high on the trail near a three-person lift and slid headfirst for hundreds of yards while witnesses on a nearby chairlift videotaped the ordeal. Ski patrollers arrived within minutes, transported him to Mammoth Hospital, but he died. The victim's identity has not been released, and Mammoth has suffered multiple fatalities this season (four in total).
