The Israel-Hamas War: Unmasking the Flood of Misinformation

Premium, verified accounts on Elon Musk's X platform are reportedly cashing in on spreading misinformation about the Israel-Hamas conflict. These accounts pay X to promote their posts, boosting their visibility and reach. NewsGuard, an information analysis company, identified seven "misinformation superspreaders" taking advantage of X's verification policy changes. These accounts share widely debunked claims, including recycled videos from unrelated conflicts, to make false assertions about Israel and Hamas. NewsGuard's analysis found that these posts received over 1.3 million engagements and were viewed more than 100 million times globally in just one week. Musk, the CEO of X, responded to the report by stating that the company should be disbanded. The European Union has also opened an investigation into X over the spread of disinformation and illegal content related to the Israel-Hamas war.
