The whereabouts of deposed Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir are unclear after an attack on the prison where he was being held. The Sudanese military and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces are battling each other across the capital, with conflicting reports about whether al-Bashir has been released or moved to a secure location. Al-Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court for genocide and other crimes committed during the conflict in Sudan’s western Darfur region in the 2000s. The prison held a number of activists detained after the coup, some of whom have been released due to the fighting and lack of food and water.
