Portugal's President Calls for Acknowledgement of Responsibility for Slavery.

Portugal's President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has suggested that his country should take responsibility and apologize for its role in the transatlantic slave trade, which saw 6 million Africans forcibly transported across the Atlantic by Portuguese vessels and sold into slavery. Rebelo de Sousa made the remarks at Portugal's annual commemoration of the 1974 "Carnation" revolution. Brazil's human rights minister, Silvio Almeida, called the move "extremely important," while the founder of Afrolink online platform for Black professionals in Portugal, Paula Cardoso, said the president's remarks were "symbolic" but needed to be accompanied by concrete measures and commitments.
