Olivia Chow Makes History as Toronto's First Chinese-Canadian Mayor

Olivia Chow, a former member of parliament and Toronto city councillor, has been elected as the first Chinese-Canadian mayor of Toronto, Canada's largest city. Chow, who secured 37.2% of the vote, pledged to support renters, champion social causes, and reduce the powers of her office. She takes over from John Tory, who resigned earlier this year, and will lead the city amidst rising housing costs and increased violent attacks on public transit. Chow plans to build 25,000 rent-controlled homes over eight years to address soaring rents.
