Moldovan President Calls for Pro-EU Protests

Moldova's President Maia Sandu has called for a "European Moldova National Assembly" on May 21 in Chișinău to show support for the country's EU future and to counter rising fears of Russian interference. Moldova was granted EU candidate status last June but has faced increasing pressure from Moscow since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Sandu has previously accused the Kremlin of planning to stage a coup in Moldova and the police have arrested a group of men with ties to Russia who were plotting to stir unrest at anti-government protests in Chișinău.
