Mohammed al-Bashir Leads Syrian Transitional Government Formation

Mohammed al-Bashir has been appointed by the Syrian Islamist opposition group Hayat Tahrir al-Shams (HTS) and former officials of the Assad regime to form a transitional government in Syria. Al-Bashir, who has been serving as the Prime Minister of the Syrian Salvation Government since January 2024, was chosen following a meeting between HTS leader Ahmad al-Sharaa and former Assad regime Prime Minister Mohammad al-Jalali. HTS, which played a significant role in the offensive that led to the collapse of the Assad regime, is the only group to recognize Bashir's new position so far.
