Indian police have arrested Sikh separatist Amritpal Singh, who had been on the run since mid-March, for attempted murder, obstruction of law enforcement, and creating disharmony. Singh and his supporters had raided a police station in February after one of his aides was arrested. His arrest has revived talk of an independent Sikh homeland and stoked fears of a return to violence in Punjab. Singh was arrested under the National Security Act, which allows for detention without charge for up to a year.
