Officials Arrested in Investigation into Deadly Libyan Floods

Sixteen officials in Libya, including the coastal city's mayor and water infrastructure authorities, have been detained as part of an investigation into the deadly collapse of two dams in Derna after heavy rain earlier this month. The floods resulted in thousands of deaths and sparked protests demanding the removal of those in power. The attorney general's office has placed the officials under pre-trial detention and is also investigating others connected to the floods and the city's reconstruction project. The dams, which were built in the 1970s, had not undergone maintenance since 2002, despite warnings of their high flood risk.
