7.1-magnitude earthquake strikes remote Pacific Ocean, no tsunami danger

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck in a remote part of the Pacific Ocean near the Kermadec Islands, but did not generate a tsunami. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat to Hawaii or the wider Pacific. New Zealand's National Emergency Management Agency is assessing whether the quake could affect the country. The Kermadec Islands are uninhabited except for Raoul Island where New Zealand scientists sometimes stay over to carry out meteorological observations or weed control work.
