Spain Rescues Dozens in Search for Missing Migrant Vessels near Canary Islands

Spain's Maritime Rescue Service has rescued 86 people sailing in a multi-colored pirogue, a canoe-like vessel popular in Senegal, but it is unclear if they were from one of the three missing boats carrying roughly 300 people from Senegal to the Spanish Canary Islands. Spanish authorities have spotted a possible missing vessel with around 200 people on board near Gran Canaria. Migrant aid group Caminando Fronteras reported that three boats with at least 300 migrants on board have disappeared off the Canary Islands. The Atlantic migration passage is one of the deadliest in the world, with at least 951 migrants dying while trying to reach Spain by sea in the first half of 2023.
