Senegal's Navy Foils Attempted Migration by Intercepting Boats with 600 People

Senegal's navy has intercepted four boats carrying over 600 people attempting to reach Spain's Canary Islands, a gateway to Europe. The navy has increased patrols to combat irregular migration, and witnesses reported migrants jumping off a boat to avoid arrest. At least 140 migrants have died or gone missing attempting the Atlantic crossing since early 2023. In August alone, over 2,690 people arrived in the Canary Islands from Senegal and Morocco, more than double the number from the same month last year.
