Pope Francis undergoes successful abdominal surgery in Rome.

Pope Francis underwent abdominal surgery at Gemelli University Hospital in Rome due to an incisional laparocele (hernia) causing intestinal blockage. The procedure lasted three hours and went without complications. The 86-year-old pope is expected to remain in the hospital for several days to recover. All of his audiences are canceled through June 18 as a precaution. This is the second time in a few months that the pope has been hospitalized, having been treated for respiratory problems earlier this spring.
