Paris Triples Parking Fees for SUVs

Parisians have voted to triple parking fees for large sport utility vehicles and other heavy cars in an effort led by Mayor Anne Hidalgo to promote environmentally conscious and pedestrian-friendly policies. The new fees, expected to be approved in May and take effect in September, will apply to cars weighing more than 1.6 metric tons and will mostly affect outside visitors. While some residents have criticized the move, citing potential exclusion of large families and newer, cleaner S.U.V.s, the city authorities argue that such vehicles emit more greenhouse gases and pose greater danger to pedestrians.
