Italian Authorities Seize Record Cocaine Haul in Mediterranean

Italian authorities have seized almost two tonnes of cocaine floating off the coast of eastern Sicily in what is being called a "record" seizure. The drugs were stored in 70 waterproof packages and were likely dropped by a cargo ship. The cocaine, bundled in over 1,600 individual packs, is worth more than €400m. The surge in cocaine seizures in Italy is consistent with a recent report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime stating that cocaine production was at its highest level on record.
