Australian soldier Ben Roberts-Smith, who was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery, has lost his defamation suit against three newspapers that reported he had murdered Afghans during multiple deployments to the country. The court found that Roberts-Smith probably killed unarmed civilians in Afghanistan. The case comes amid a growing focus on the conduct of Australia’s military, with the landmark Brereton Report finding there was “credible evidence” members of the special forces had unlawfully killed 39 people while deployed in Afghanistan.
