Sudan is currently experiencing intense fighting as two generals share power after a coup in 2021. The conflict has caused an exodus of foreign officials and citizens and a growing number of refugees. Sudan is the third largest nation in Africa and has a varied climate and geography, with much of the population clustered in a few key areas. The Nile River is a prominent feature, providing two-thirds of the country's fresh water and sometimes causing contention between Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Egypt.
