Indonesian Market Puts an End to Brutal Dog and Cat Meat Trade

The Tomohon Extreme Market in Indonesia has become the first market in the country to stop the sale of dog and cat meat. The remaining six traders signed an agreement to cease their sales, and the mayor of Tomohon issued a statute to ban the trade. Animal welfare groups campaigned against the "brutally cruel" treatment of animals at the market, and hope to see the ban extended nationwide. The trade not only causes immense animal suffering but also poses health risks to humans. Despite being considered haram in Islam, up to 7% of Indonesians consume dog and cat meat, mainly in certain provinces.
