Indonesian Animal Market Finally Ends Brutal Dog and Cat Meat Trade

The Tomohon Extreme Market on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi has announced the permanent end of its dog and cat meat trade, following a years-long campaign by local activists and international celebrities. The market, previously listed as a tourist attraction, had been selling cat meat and the carcasses of wild and protected species. Animal welfare groups documented the brutal treatment of dogs and cats at the market, generating global outrage. The anti-animal cruelty group Humane Society International (HSI) has confirmed that the market will become the first in Indonesia to go dog and cat meat-free. HSI will rescue the remaining live animals and take them to sanctuaries. The campaign to end the dog meat trade in Indonesia aims to prevent the spread of rabies and improve animal welfare.
