Tragic Collision Claims Lives of Firefighting Helicopter Crews in Southern California

Three people, including a contracted pilot, a CalFire division chief, and a CalFire captain, were killed when two helicopters collided while battling the Broadway Fire in Cabazon, Southern California. The fire, which started after a structure fire spread to nearby vegetation, was quickly contained. A second fire ignited by the crash has been extinguished. The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident, marking the first deaths of California's 2023 fire season.
