Denmark Contemplates Banning Quran-Burning Protests Amidst Tensions

Denmark is considering banning events where religions are insulted after far-right groups burned Qurans in front of foreign embassies in Copenhagen. The Danish government finds the burnings deeply offensive and believes they play into the hands of extremists. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated that a legal tool must be found to prevent Quran burnings in front of foreign embassies. The act is currently permitted under freedom of expression and right to protest laws in Denmark and Sweden. The burnings caused a diplomatic spat with Turkey and were condemned by the European Union.
