Idalia's Impact: From Grounded Planes to All Clear

As Hurricane Idalia approached Florida, all of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) hurricane-hunting planes were grounded due to technical issues and repairs. The grounding of the planes, including the last remaining "hurricane hunter" plane called Miss Piggy, raised concerns about the availability of crucial storm data for accurate forecasting and decision-making. While the Hurricane Center has alternative methods for gathering information, experts emphasize the importance of the planes in providing data that informs watches, warnings, and evacuation decisions. NOAA is planning to replace its aging aircraft and is currently relying on other observing platforms to track storms.
