Mayon Volcano Erupts, Forcing Thousands to Evacuate

Thousands of people have been evacuated from the area around the Mayon volcano in the Philippines as it begins to send lava down its slopes. The volcano, which is the country's most active, has seen increased seismic activity, with 260 rockfall events in the past 24 hours and 21 tremors recorded. The alert level remains at three, meaning there is a tendency towards a hazardous eruption in weeks or days. The area below Mayon is a permanent danger zone, but many thousands of people continue to live there because they have nowhere else to go.
