UAW Members Overwhelmingly Vote to Authorize Strikes at Detroit Three Automakers

The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has announced that its members have voted overwhelmingly in favor of authorizing a strike at the Detroit Three automakers - General Motors, Ford Motor, and Stellantis - if a new labor contract is not reached before the current one expires on September 14. UAW President Shawn Fain stated that the union does not plan to extend the deadline and listed a series of demands, including an end to the tiered wage system and the reinstatement of cost-of-living adjustments and defined-benefit pension plans. Talks have been progressing slowly since July, and analysts estimate a more than 50% chance of a strike.
