Bronx Day Care Tragedy: Toddler's Suspected Fentanyl Death Leads to Arrests

The owner of a Bronx day care center, Grei Mendez, claims she had no knowledge of drugs being present after a 1-year-old boy died from suspected fentanyl exposure. Mendez and Carlisto Acevedo Brito have been charged with murder, manslaughter, and other offenses. Four children became sick, and one died, from apparent fentanyl exposure at the day care. Authorities found a package of fentanyl and press devices in the facility. Mendez's attorney stated that she called the police and had no previous knowledge of drug poisoning. Mendez and Brito pleaded not guilty and were remanded without bail. The surviving children are in stable or critical condition. Investigations are ongoing to determine how the children came into contact with the drug.
