Rising Support for Hamas in Palestine Amidst Cease-Fire Talks and Blame Game

Despite being designated as a terrorist organization by the US and viewed as brutal terrorism by Israelis, Hamas has seen a surge in popularity among Palestinians following their attack on Israel on October 7th. Many Palestinians view the attack as an act of resistance and defiance against Israeli occupation, and support for Hamas has tripled in the West Bank since then. The release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for hostages taken during the attack has further bolstered Hamas' reputation. Palestinians increasingly believe that peace talks and negotiations with Israel have failed, and armed struggle is necessary for independence and freedom from Israeli occupation. The more moderate Palestinian Authority has seen its support collapse in recent years, partly due to perceived collaboration with Israeli security officials. The ongoing violence in Gaza and the West Bank has further radicalized Palestinian society.
