COP28 President Faces Controversy Over Oil Deals and Fossil Fuel Promotion

Sultan Al Jaber, the president of the UN Cop28 climate summit, has denied allegations that he abused his position to sign oil deals with other governments. The Centre for Climate Reporting and the BBC released documents suggesting that meetings held by the Cop28 presidency included discussions about potential oil and gas sales by Adnoc, the UAE's national oil company, which Al Jaber also heads. Campaigners argue that his dual roles are in conflict. Over 160 heads of state and government are expected to attend the summit, aiming to put the world on track to limit global temperature rises to 1.5C above preindustrial levels. However, concerns remain over the lack of progress in emissions cuts, loss and damage funding, and phasing out fossil fuels.
