StorCentric, the holding company for Drobo and Retrospect, has reportedly filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, indicating a shift from reorganization to liquidation. Drobo had already stopped sales and support in January 2023, transitioning to a self-service model. The company, which began in 2005 as Data Robotics, was known for its "storage robot" that allowed for hot-swapping drives of nearly any size without migrating data. However, the rise of cloud storage and streaming media, as well as a trend away from local file storage, likely contributed to Drobo's decline.
