The AI Race: Google's Struggle to Stay Ahead of Open-Source Technology

An internal Google memo called "We Have No Moat, And Neither Does OpenAI" warns that both Google and OpenAI/Microsoft will be adversely impacted by a flood of open source AI frameworks, models, and datasets that will be as profound as the Protestant Reformation. The memo highlights that AI training is a lot further along to being democratized than previously thought, with many open source AI models getting good results on modest hardware. The memo also suggests that smaller retuned models with better data might trump bigger models with more data that are completely retrained for certain tasks.
