School Custodian Coaches Chess Team to Championship Victory

Dave Bishop, a part-time chess coach and custodian at George B. Weatherbee School in Maine, has coached his school's chess team to victory at the Maine Scholastic Chess Championships. He spends hours with students every week, without receiving a dime, and teaches them perseverance and a love for the game. One of his mentees, 11-year-old Avery Zhang, was crowned the state champion for grades K through 5 this year. Bishop's teams are now headed to the 2023 National Elementary Championships in Baltimore.
