"Highway 1 Collapse Strands Tourists and Closes Historic Roadway"

A section of Highway 1 in California's Big Sur area collapsed, leaving about 2,000 motorists, mostly tourists, stranded overnight. The closure, from Lime Creek to the north and Limekiln to the south, was due to slide activity, and officials did not provide an estimated reopening time. Emergency management officials sent convoys to evacuate stranded individuals, many of whom had to sleep in temporary shelters, hotels, campgrounds, or their cars.
