California Implements Automated Speed Cameras and Parking Regulations to Enhance Road Safety

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed legislation allowing six cities, including San Francisco and Los Angeles, to install speed cameras to improve pedestrian safety. The move comes as pedestrian deaths have increased due to reckless driving and a lack of traffic enforcement. The new law addresses concerns about driver privacy and disproportionate citations by allowing low-income individuals to perform community service instead of paying fines. California is joining other cities across the country in using speed cameras, which have been shown to significantly reduce speeding. San Francisco will be allowed to install 33 automated speed cameras, with fines starting at $50 for drivers going at least 11 mph above the speed limit.
