Palm Springs Approves $5.9M Reparations for Displaced Section 14 Families

The Palm Springs City Council has approved a $5.9 million reparations settlement for Black and Latino families whose homes were destroyed by the city 60 years ago to make way for commercial development. The settlement, which benefits around 1,200 people, includes cash payments, a commitment to establish a cultural healing center, and a public monument. Additionally, the city will invest $21 million in housing and economic development programs to address past discrimination. This decision follows a long campaign by former residents and their descendants for justice and acknowledgment of the racial trauma they endured.
