"Stay Safe this Thanksgiving: Fire Risks and Cooking Tips"

State Farm Insurance is warning consumers about the increased risk of home cooking fires on Thanksgiving Day, which is the peak day for such incidents in the U.S. According to the National Fire Protection Association, last year State Farm paid over $196 million for 2,210 grease or cooking fire claims. The insurance company advises people to follow basic safety tips, such as keeping an eye on cooking, avoiding cooking while sleepy or under the influence of alcohol, and keeping flammable items away from stovetops. They also recommend having a fire extinguisher nearby and knowing how to handle a fire, including using a lid to cover a pan fire and calling the fire department if necessary.
