White House Convenes State Legislators to Tackle Gun Violence

Vice President Kamala Harris will meet with 100 Democratic state legislators from 39 states at the White House to discuss ways to address gun violence in the United States. The Department of Justice will also announce two actions aimed at supporting safe storage and reporting of stolen firearms. Harris will discuss setting up state offices of gun violence prevention, red flag laws, responsible gun ownership, safe storage requirements, reporting lost and stolen firearms, and supporting survivors. Gun violence has been the leading cause of death for children in the US since 2020, and the country has the highest rate of gun deaths among wealthy nations. Democrats generally support stricter gun laws and expanded mental health services, while Republicans, backed by the National Rifle Association, oppose stricter laws citing the Second Amendment.
