US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and a bipartisan congressional delegation met with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in California, increasing tensions with China. McCarthy called Tsai "a great friend to America" and said they would find ways to promote economic freedom, democracy, peace, and stability in Asia. China has threatened "resolute actions" in response to the meeting, which follows private meetings Tsai held with US lawmakers last week. Tsai's weeklong trip to the US is technically unofficial, but her packed schedule of high-level meetings with US lawmakers rivals that of any official visit by a world leader.
