Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is investigating former President Donald Trump's refusal to return classified documents and aspects of the Capitol siege, has spent over $5 million on his tasks so far, with more than half going towards salaries for lawyers and other DOJ employees. Smith has charged Trump and his valet with conspiracy to obstruct the probe, and both have pleaded not guilty. The Justice Department also released financial reports for two other special counsels, including one overseeing an investigation into the unauthorized removal of classified materials at the Penn Biden Center. The previous special counsel investigation into Trump's ties to Russia spent $32 million.
