The position is important as special counsel Jack Smith conducts investigations into Trump's retention of classified documents and efforts to undo the 2020 presidential election. Boasberg has previously served as presiding judge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court and raised concerns about errors and omissions in surveillance applications filed during the Trump-Russia investigation.
