Texas Governor Greg Abbott has appointed former Secretary of State John Scott as interim attorney general following the impeachment of Ken Paxton by the state House of Representatives. Paxton has been under FBI investigation for years on allegations of abusing his office to help a donor and is also awaiting trial on an indictment for state securities fraud charges from 2015. The state Senate will hold a trial to decide whether he should be permanently removed from office. Abbott appointed Scott, who has decades of experience in litigation, to serve as the state's top law enforcement officer during Paxton's suspension.
