Residents Clash with City Officials Over Brighton Park Migrant Tent Camp

Alderwoman Julia Ramirez and her staffer were attacked at a protest in Brighton Park over the city's plan to build a tent encampment for migrants. Ramirez was swarmed by protesters who threw signs at her, screamed, and grabbed her. Police had to escort her to safety while her staffer was hospitalized. The protesters voiced opposition to the lack of notification and input from officials regarding the proposed camp. Mayor Brandon Johnson condemned the attack and stated that any violent act against an elected official is unacceptable. The city is reviewing the site as a possible location for the tent camps to provide shelter for the increasing number of migrants overwhelming the city's shelter system.
