California Governor Gavin Newsom visited New College of Florida and expressed support for students and faculty protesting the conservative takeover of the school by trustees appointed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Newsom criticized DeSantis and his initiatives, including the appointment of high-profile conservatives to the New College board of trustees and the banning of books. He also challenged fellow Democrats to speak out against DeSantis' attempts to ban an Advanced Placement course in African American studies. Newsom denied further political ambitions and said he was taking his sons on a tour of the South during their spring break.
