Newport Mayor Steps Down Amid Backlash Over Hateful Facebook Posts

Newport Mayor Dean Sawyer has resigned after offensive content he posted in a private Facebook group for law enforcement officers was revealed. The posts, which targeted women, immigrants, non-English speakers, and the LGBTQ+ community, were shared since at least 2016. Sawyer apologized for his actions and acknowledged the hurt caused. A protest organized by Newport Oregon Pride demanded his resignation, and five of his colleagues on the Newport City Council attended. The council was set to formally ask for his resignation at a special meeting. Sawyer's resignation was welcomed, and the council will appoint a permanent replacement.
