Elected officials in St. Louis and Missouri have largely welcomed the resignation of Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner, who will step down on June 1, 2023. Governor Mike Parson has pledged to appoint a replacement who represents the community and values public safety. Gardner, the first Black woman to lead the office, faced unprecedented attacks rooted in misogyny and racism, according to U.S. Rep. Cori Bush. Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, however, called for Gardner's immediate removal, saying her continued presence in office puts the city in danger.
