Judge orders Pence to testify in Jan. 6 probe, rejecting Trump's privilege claims.

A federal judge has ordered former Vice President Mike Pence to testify before the grand jury tied to the special counsel probe into former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. The ruling requires Pence to comply with a subpoena issued by special counsel Jack Smith in February. While Pence argued that he was shielded from having to testify about Jan. 6 because of his constitutional role as part of the legislative branch, the judge ruled that the immunity does not prevent him from testifying about conversations related to alleged “illegality” on Trump’s part. The judge also rejected Trump’s objections to the subpoena on executive privilege grounds. It remains unclear whether Pence plans to appeal the decision.
