New York Republican congressman George Santos has pleaded not guilty to 13 charges, including wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds, and making false statements to the House of Representatives. He surrendered to the authorities and was taken into custody earlier in the day before being released on a $500,000 bond ahead of his next court appearance on 30 June. Santos has been accused of lying about his personal background and campaign finances. He called the probe a "witch hunt" and plans to run for re-election. Republican leaders in the House of Representatives are not yet ready to expel him.
